How To Create An Effective Workplace Violence Prevention Plan

Prevent Workplace Violence

According to the Gun Violence Archive, more than 350 mass shootings have occurred in the U.S. during the first seven months of 2022. As active shooter incidents increase, expectations on how small businesses should prepare are also changing.

For example, many businesses overlook the importance of having a secure barrier to prevent unauthorized individuals from gaining access to the building. While it can be tedious work, having a secretary or reception area where guests must check in and out when accessing the facility is crucial for your business's safety.

Another scenario that could compromise your business' safety, yet many people neglect is providing information to a caller inquiring whether a given employee is at work. This situation might seem innocent, but you could be giving away information that could potentially put your employee in danger.

So, the best practice is to avoid answering those questions whatsoever. Instead, take a message or ask them to send an email - you should never share whether an individual is or is not at work under any circumstances.
