Should You Be Monitoring Your Employees' Social Media?

Right off the bat, the idea of snooping through your employees' social media accounts might sound dubious. However, it also makes sense to ensure that what your employees post online isn't harming your business. So, what's the best strategy here?

The first step to dealing with this issue is understanding that context is essential. In some situations monitoring social media accounts can help reach a decision. 

However, this doesn't mean that monitoring social media should be a standard practice, and employees should have agency on how they conduct themselves online.

Which platforms you're using to do your research also matters. From an employer standpoint, there is no problem with researching LinkedIn accounts since the content job seekers or current employees share there is intended to be viewed by potential employers.

But when it comes to other social media platforms where people share their personal lives, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat - things can quickly become problematic for obvious reasons.

So, as a rule of thumb, if you don't have a reason to look on these platforms - don't go looking.
